JC JOYAGE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM 2021

Healthy Ageing: The Intersection between Physical Health, Mental Health, and the Environment

The United Nations (UN) has proclaimed 2021-2030 the Decade of Healthy Ageing, with the World Health Organization (WHO) leading international actions to improve the well-being of older people. WHO has embraced a more holistic definition of well-being, given the interaction between physical health, mental health, and environmental factors, it has declared that there is no health without mental health. However, physical health, mental health, and environmental factors had seldomly been discussed all at once, especially when it comes to the overall well-being of older adults. The Symposium brings together world-renowned speakers to share the cutting-edge multidisciplinary research findings based on the framework of healthy aging, and discuss the implications of this framework for decision-makers, researchers, and practitioners.

    ABOUT JC JOYAGE

According to a study, about 10% of the elderly population in Hong Kong have depressive symptoms. Factors such as stress, health problems and a lack of social engagement usually contribute to the vulnerability of older people and cause higher risks of elderly depression or other major illness. In response to this concern, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust approved over HK$366 million to initiate the “JC JoyAge: Jockey Club Holistic Support Project for Elderly Mental Wellness” (JC JoyAge). Launched in 2016, the project aims to tackle the problem of elderly depression, enhance capacity of professional and non-professional manpower as well as raising public awareness of elderly mental health.
